Economy and Society in Eastern & Central Europe

Workshop in economic history and development

Center for Comparative Studies of Emerging Economics

at UCL School of Slavonic and East-European Studies (UCL-SSEES)

London, 3 – 4 April 2017

(immediately following the Economic History Society meetings, also in London)

Keynote speaker: Mark Harrison, University of Warwick

CALL FOR PAPERS

Deadline: Friday 4th November 2016

Economies do not operate in a vacuum; societies can scarcely be conceived outside of their economic context. The specifics of the economy-society interactions, however, are much harder to pin down. Central and Eastern Europe provides fruitful ground for the investigation of such interactions, given the varied history. The WEast network was established in 2011 with a view to connect scholars and researchers who work to document and analyze the economic developments and social history of the region in a quantitative way.

The WEast workshop in London offers an opportunity for all economic and social historians and cliometricians to present their research. The workshop will be hosted by the Center for Comparative Studies of Emerging Economies at UCL School of Slavonic and East-European Studies, a leading institution in historical and social-science research on the East and Central-European region for over a hundred years. Organizers invite both established researchers and graduate students to submit their proposals for this workshop. We particularly welcome research into general economic issues from a historical perspective or into less widely known aspects of Central and Eastern Europe’s development. Part of the program will be devoted to the special issue of the Economic History of Developing Regions on the topic. The workshop will support the prospective authors in the revision process and encourage further collaboration between WEast, the School and the Journal.

We invite all those interested, whether they are part of the special issue or not, to email their research paper and/or extended abstract along with a short academic CV to Tomas Cvrcek (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) no later than 4th November 2016. Selected participants will be informed soon afterwards. There is no participation fee, but travel expenses and hotel accommodation costs are the responsibility of participants. We may also be able to arrange discounted accommodation in single room student dorms for those on limited budget. Further details about exact arrangements will be communicated to selected participants and also made available at http://weast.info/.
