Markets and Institutions in Eastern & Central Europe

conference in economic, financial, and business history

Institute for Economic History, Humboldt University

Berlin, 4 – 5 September 2020

Keynote speaker: Joachim Voth, University of Zurich

Deadline: 1th March 2020

Geography, markets, and institutions – including banks, businesses, and political bodies – are crucial determinants of economic growth and development. Central, Eastern, and South-Eastern Europe provide fruitful ground for the investigation of both drivers of and obstacles to prosperity. The WEast network was established in 2011 with a view to connect scholars and researchers who study the economic and social history as well as business history of the region.

The WEast Conference in Berlin offers an opportunity for all economic and business historians to present their research. We invite papers focusing on any historical time period and based on both quantitative and/or qualitative methods. The workshop will be hosted by the Institute for Economic History at Humboldt University. Organizers invite both established researchers and graduate students to submit their proposals.

We invite all those interested to email their research paper and/or extended abstract along with a short academic CV to Mikołaj Malinowski (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) no later than 1th March 2020. Selected participants will be informed soon thereafter. There is no participation fee, but travel expenses and hotel accommodation costs are the responsibility of participants. There is limited funding available for selected participants with no conference budget. Please indicate in your application that you would like to receive a subsidy. Further details will be communicated to selected participants and also made available at http://weast.info/. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mikołaj Malinowski.
