Markets and Regions in Historical Perspective
WEast Network Conference

Faculty of Economics, Business and Tourism at the University of Split
Split, Croatia
23-24 April 2020

Keynote speaker:
Giovanni Federico (University of Pisa and NYU Abu Dhabi)

CALL FOR PAPERS

Deadline: 15 December 2019

One of the biggest challenges faced by social science is to understand why certain regions of the world have
become richer than others. Economic history can provide valuable insights. To broaden our understanding
of both past and present drivers of prosperity, the participants of the conference will explore how have
markets in the eastern regions of Europe changed in relation to developmental factors such as endowments,
geography, institutions, or culture. Discussions will include, but are not limited to, questions of capital,
goods, and labor market integration or disintegration, in different historical periods and levels of spatial
aggregation. While we welcome research dealing with any aspect of the economic and social history of
Central, East and South-East Europe (including Russia and Eastern Mediterranean), research engaging
directly with the conference theme may be given preference. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches
are welcome.

The organizers invite both graduate students and established scholars to submit their scientific work. An
important aim of the conference is to facilitate communication between scholars from the “East” and the
“West” working in the broad realm of Eastern European economic and social history in order to share their
research and to encourage exchange of knowledge about available sources of data and state-of-the-art
methodologies.
